Windoors (windows and doors) must have gaps between the shutter and frame and between the bottom of door and floor for easy pening and closing. Also, such gaps accomodate normal building movement.

But since such gaps allow the leakage of sound, fire, smoke, dust, wind, rain, light and heat/cold, sealing of such gaps is of prime importance. Where such doors are installed for acoustical purposes of controlling noise, effective acoustical sealing becomes essential.

The National Building Code (NBC) requires large buildings to be sub-divided into smaller spaces bounded by building elements which resist the spread of fire and smoke. Noise management is also necessary. Glazed panels or screens or windows are often required
to allow vision and natural light through fire and noiserated walls and doors.

In door assemblies, especially those on circulation routes, glazed apertures allow people to see others approaching from the opposite direction: they also allow fire and smoke to be seen without opening the door thereby contributing to safety.
